What is the Love, Wish & Wonderland retrospective?

Love, Wish & Wonderland is a retrospective that moves from appreciation to imagination. Your team starts with what it values, moves on to what it would change, then spends some time on ideas that might seem out of reach today. The light framing makes it easier for people to share honest feelings as well as bold ideas. The board has four columns. Love surfaces the practices, habits and wins the team wants to protect. Wish captures realistic improvements people would like to see, framed as hopes instead of complaints. Wonderland is the no-limits column for "what if" ideas and experiments, with no feasibility check yet. Actions turns the strongest wishes and Wonderland ideas into commitments with owners. It works well after a milestone, with a tired team that needs some energy back, or at the start of a new initiative where imagination matters. In TeamRetro you can run it remotely or in the room: add ideas, group the themes, vote on what matters most and track the actions through to your next retro.

Love, Wish & Wonderland retrospective format

Love

What do you genuinely value and want to keep?

Use this column to surface the practices, habits and wins the team values and wants to protect. Ask people to be specific and to thank teammates by name. Starting with what's working builds the trust you need for honest reflection later in the session.

Wish

What changes or improvements would you like to see?

This is the place for constructive hopes: what people wish were different or possible. Ask for wishes framed as what you want, not as complaints, and focus on what's within the team's control. Group similar wishes and vote so you can pick the most useful ones to act on.

Wonderland

What bold 'what if' ideas could we explore?

Wonderland is the no-limits column. Invite the team to set practical constraints aside and dream. Capture even the wildest suggestions, since some of the best ideas start as a playful 'what if'. You can decide later which ones are worth a pilot.

Actions

What will we commit to doing next?

Turn the strongest loves, wishes and Wonderland ideas into clear actions, each with an owner and a date. Keep the list short enough to finish before the next session, and review it at the start of your next retrospective.

Ideas and tips for your retrospective meeting

  • Say at the start that Wonderland is judgment-free, so people feel safe sharing wild ideas.
  • Start with Love to build some positive energy before moving on to wishes and what-ifs.
  • Use anonymous input so quieter or more junior team members share openly.
  • Timebox each column so Wonderland doesn't crowd out the actions.
  • Group and vote on ideas to find the themes that matter most to the whole team.
  • Turn the top wishes and Wonderland ideas into actions with owners, so the session changes something.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Love, Wish & Wonderland retrospective take?
Most teams finish in 45 to 60 minutes. Allow extra time for Wonderland if you want a longer creative discussion, or tighten the timeboxes for a 30-minute version.
When should I use this retrospective instead of a standard one?
Use it when you want a more creative, positive session: after a milestone, when morale is low, or at the start of a new initiative that needs fresh thinking.
What's the difference between 'Wish' and 'Wonderland'?
A wish is a realistic improvement the team could act on soon. Wonderland is blue-sky thinking where any idea is welcome, whether or not it's feasible yet.
Does it work for remote teams?
Yes. TeamRetro has anonymous input, grouping, voting and action tracking, so a distributed team can run it entirely online.
How do I make sure the session produces real outcomes?
Finish with the Actions column. Turn the top-voted wishes and Wonderland ideas into commitments with owners and dates, and review them at your next retrospective.
