What is the Speed Car Retrospective?

The Speed Car retrospective uses racing metaphors to look at how your team is performing and where it can improve. Borrowing from Formula 1, it asks people to think about what pushes the work forward (Engines), what holds it back (Brakes), and who helps the team succeed (Pit Crew). The racing theme gives the meeting some energy and makes it easier to talk about pace without it feeling like a performance review. Putting engines and brakes side by side shows your team where the time goes, and the pit crew column is a chance to recognize the people outside the team who keep things moving. It works well for teams in fast-moving environments, because technical and interpersonal causes of a slowdown come up in the same conversation.

Speed Car Retrospective Format

Engines

What is driving us forward?

Ask the team what is helping them move faster and get more done. Look at technical enablers and team behaviors alike. Prompt participants to think about the processes and tools that have sped them up.

Brakes

What is slowing us down?

Help the team identify impediments and bottlenecks affecting their performance. Encourage honest discussion about both technical and process-related challenges. Focus on finding actionable solutions rather than just listing problems.

Pit Crew

Who is supporting us?

Name and thank the people, teams and resources that help the team succeed, from inside the team and outside it. Use this topic to strengthen those relationships and recognize the help people have given.

When to use this retrospective

  • When your team feels stuck or slow and needs a lift.
  • After a fast-paced project, to see what helped you move quickly and what caused delays.
  • When you want to recognize the people and teams that support you, and work out what you need from them.
  • When your usual retro format has gone stale and you want a fresh way to talk about pace.

Suggested icebreaker questions

  • If your team were a race car, what type would it be and why?
  • What's your favorite pit stop moment, a time when someone helped you past a problem?

Ideas and tips for your retrospective meeting

  • Use racing language through the session to keep the theme going.
  • Ask for technical and human factors in each category.
  • Balance problems with wins. Give the engines and the pit crew real time.
  • Turn the biggest brakes into actions you can take next sprint.
  • Racing visuals or a countdown at the start can set the mood, if your team enjoys that kind of thing.
  • Timebox each area so all three get attention.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Speed Car retrospective take?
Most teams finish in 45–60 minutes: an icebreaker, then Engines, Brakes and Pit Crew, with time left to vote and agree on actions.
What are the three topics in the Speed Car retrospective?
Engines (what's driving the team forward), Brakes (what's slowing it down) and Pit Crew (who's supporting the team).
When should I use the Speed Car retrospective instead of a standard one?
Use it after a fast-paced project or sprint, when your team feels stuck, or when you want a livelier way to talk about speed and support.
How is Speed Car different from the Sailboat retrospective?
Sailboat uses wind, anchors, rocks and an island to cover what helps, what drags, the risks ahead and the goal. Speed Car keeps it to three areas and adds a pit crew column for the people who support you.
